Aarburg occupies a distinctive topographical setting along the Aare and is characterised by heritage-protected townscapes. The Gärbiareal is an industrially defined extension of the settlement and is partially dismantled as part of its transformation. The intervention creates a shorter western façade and additional open space. Access to the new residential development is opened up, while the historical significance of the Gärbiareal is preserved. Four point buildings, each consisting of a plinth level and four upper floors, articulate the elongated building volume. The spaces between the buildings allow for visual connections, while a generous forecourt facing the river gives the development a distinct character.
